Why not? – the Moroccan way

Posted by admin on 29 June 2009

OK, this might sound a little cliché, but I swear it’s true: Winter in Morocco – what a dream if you like perfect point breaks, miraculously consistent surf, incredible colors, and a lifestyle so relaxed that you wonder what we’re being so stressed about in Europe all the time. Last January we went surfing there and stayed at Tahib’s again: The most chilled place you can imagine. Hanging with the locals taught us a different kind of cool.

One thing that stayed with us when we left is this: Why not?

Whenever we would ask one of the local surf dudes anything, they would go: Why not? (try to pronounce this with a slight Moroccan accent, tilt the voice up at the why)

It’s not just a phrase, it’s a way of living: Why not? Much like Jim Carrey’s Yesman, ‘why not’ expresses a Zen-like positivity and non-attachment. You always say yes, you’re in. But you couldn’t care less either. Try it, you’ll like it. Why not?

Lighting it up, I found it didn’t taste quite as horrible as I had imagined. Then, the girl said: “Lick your lips!” Alright, what a cheesy hoop is this? But whatever, why not? [...]
