Money Series Part Two: One million in small bills – How to get it and what to do with it

Posted by admin on 6 May 2010

Since Cambodia we have had this dream: A bag full of money. A million in small bills. In the Money Series we show you how we made this dream come true and what you can do with a lot of money. Ever thought about it?

One million dong on our hotel bed

Small bills are art – beautiful, but lots of work

It should be easy: In countries like Cambodia and Vietnam there are fantastic currencies that theoretically allow you to buy banknotes very cheaply. 100 Riel equal about two Euro-Cent, 200 Dong are even less than one. Theoretically these are both available as bills. Yet in reality it is amazingly hard to get together a nice bag of money. Why is that? Try walking into a bank and changing 50 Dollars into 1-Cent coins! In truth it might even be harder here because practically no one uses 200 Dong bills, and hardly anyone uses 100 Riel bills. So we tried dozens of banks and begged them for changing part of our million Dong, only to make do with 500 Dong bills in the end. 50,000 here, 200,000 there, one time even 500,000 at once.

There’s one thing we have learned above all: Procuring lots of small bills is not a one-time thing. Rather it’s like they say about sleeping in the army: Whenever you get the chance, collect as many small bills as you can. They will try to discourage you, but seriousness, persistance, and willingness to compromise will make you prevail in the end.

If I had a million Dong …

What would you do if you had thousands of banknotes? We are looking forward to your ideas. In the coming days you will experience the results of our brainstormings on the topic. Well, the first one is pretty obvious: Spend! Mmmmh, coffee …
