Bangkok Strange Street Food Series 3: Black Stuff

Definitely the best thing about black stuff is its seraphic slimy look. On the one hand because black glibbery blocks are en vogue this summer, but mostly because its taste is – to put it gently – questionable.

blackstuff

Block of black stuff, Bangkok

Black stuff is not served on a plate, but as an ice cold drink. First you take one dipper of the sweat of the black stuff. This is collected in a container below the slimy block which is separated from it by a sifter. The sweat then is filled into a mug and mixed with some ice and water. Finally some of slime threads from the black block are scraped into the mug. Serve with a straw.

The taste of black stuff is best described as a kind of syrup with a light malty flavor. The closest comparison is sweet vapid root beer. We especially enjoyed the moments when one of the long glibbery threads winded through the straw into our mouths like an earthworm. But its worminess alone is not enough for us to justify the existence of it. So still the question why anyone should make or drink black stuff is unsettled.
