All truth is trivial. This is because most of the time, everybody knows it. At least on a rational level. Then again, often many people know the opposite as well. And that might also be true, depending on context. Yet if it hits you in the right moment, triviality can be extremely powerful and healing, as well as profoundly painful. Last weekend I went to visit Saalfelden/Austria, where my favourite jazz festival takes place (almost) every year – this year celebrating its 30th anniversary! In the past 10 years, I have missed Saalfelden only once, 2006, after the festival had paused for financial difficulties in 2005. What makes this occasion in a little Austrian town so special among the hundreds of festivals all across Europe every summer? A hymn to this unique celebration of new and creative music. The horn of General Lee awoke me in a sunflower field near Angoulême. Hectic bureaucrazyness from home, delivered in a hurry at 0.59 €/minute. Not even 10 a.m., and the sun was hiding in a gloomy haze. In spite of this, the heat was punishing already. The past month had been frustrating and exhausting on many occasions, but we had always managed to go for a sunset surf.
