The Buddhist view of karma is that of cause and effect. It doesn’t mean fate or anything like that, but refers to the effects that your thinking, speaking, and acting has on the world, and on your inner world in particular. The interesting thing is that karma makes people act in unconscious ways because of what they have done earlier (even in earlier lifes, though for me personally, this is more of a metaphor. More on that in another post.), and it makes the world treat you in specific ways because of what you have done. So it is often translated as cause and effect, but the ways in which it works are often so complex that the scientific notion of cause and effect is insufficient to describe it, and concepts like synchronicity seem more appropriate. An interesting view of karma is that it gives us a chance to learn. I have recently had the doubious pleasure of experiencing intense karma firsthand. In the next days I will publish three gruelling short stories that might illustrate what I mean. And yes, they are all about sex and relationships.

The people I meet often tell me they envy me for the life I’m leading: Traveling and writing about it, exciting adventures all the time … but as a travel companion of mine once said: They don’t know how it is. Den Rest dieses Eintrags anzeigen.

How I found five simple rules that have improved my life a lot.
A while ago, I went to redeem the Thai massage voucher I had received for my birthday. First off, this Thai massage wasn’t like you might think it is. It was done by a guy, and it was basically just applying pressure. If you’re like me, this might sound disappointing, but you would be wrong. It was an extremely relaxing experience, and I could really use it at the peak of my PhD thesis stress period (by the way, I submitted that thesis today!). So go try it if you can – plus, it’s a perfect gift.
Anyway, following the massage, I was given some tea and rested in my bliss, when I spotted a pink leaflet featuring esoteric symbolism. It said Reiki. You know, the Japanese art of palm healing. I have always been interested in this kind of stuff, and so I flipped it through, just to find this treasure at the end: Den Rest dieses Eintrags anzeigen.

I’m coping with my second breakup in a few months, and my pain has eased off considerably since the last post. If you got dumped or have some other difficult emotions that you can’t let go of, I know where you’re coming from. This might become a somewhat longer article, but if you’re like me, letting some time pass might not seem like such a bad idea in your state. Den Rest dieses Eintrags anzeigen.

I'm coping with my second breakup in a few months, and my pain has eased off considerably since the last post. If you got dumped or have some other difficult emotions that you can't let go of, I know where you're coming from. This might become a somewhat longer article, but if you're like me, letting some time pass might not seem like such a bad idea in your state.
I'm writing from my own viewpoint only to simplify things, but feel free to replace pronouns if you're female/gay, or use some of these techniques on entirely different emotions or situations that trouble you. This may read a little like a shopping list, but I do advocate trying all of these techniques, and repeat the ones that work best. It's not as if you had something better to do now, is it?
The Basics
Indeed, the first thing to realize - and it took me a while - is that this will take time. How much time? That depends. My mom once told me a month per relationship year. Personally, I have suffered longer and shorter, but that seems the ri
