In the beginning there was a flight

Posted by julian on 19 February 2010

Extended traveling has been on our mind for a long time. Even the general conditions have been aligned for some time, given that Stefan finished his doctoral exam three months ago with the same goal that I had in mind when I dropped out of college a while ago: Getting some distance between us and an academic career for some time. Thus, both of us not being tied to a fixed place of residence anymore has quickly led to a common plan: The sagesex world tour.

Wisdom from our second day in Bangkok

A befitting motto we encountered in Bangkok when looking for the Myanmar embassy

Observant readers will ask themselves “if this plan has existed for more than three months, what has become of it?”. And that’s the thing with plans – making them doesn’t mean going through with them, and even less so when they’re just vague ideas. Still for a long time we didn’t have more than that. Where to go? For how long? And when for god’s sake? All this was clarified for me in a phone call with Stefan in the end of january. He said he had booked flights for us, to Bangkok, Thailand – we had been talking about that place – on February 16th. It all should become a tour through all of South East Asia until the end of this year.

Now the countdown was running; three weeks time. Some money had to be acquired to pay the debt for the flights, we needed long term travel insurance, my flat had to be sublet, and much more. You could say we did make much more, even if exactly in these three points we didn’t make it. Still February 16th has been three days ago, which means we said goodbye to many important people, sometimes very painfully, sometimes less so, goodbye to friends, to lovers, to our family; and suddenly, having left behind our jackets in the plane – for it is about 45 degrees warmer here than where we left from – we stood in the glittering consumer metropolis of the east – on our own in a strange city, the streets filled with strangers and strange, delicious fragrances. So exotic did it seem to us that it took us hours to notice the fact that the millions of cars are driving on the left side of the street.

And still our reboot hasn’t been complete: Just like the above-mentioned problems from home remain, so remain the beloved people there, doing their best to help us with the problems, so remains the feeling of the final embrace and of course all that the impressions from home and the people there have made us become. Because they, too, are what has made us strong enough for this outer new beginning.

So if for us it’s only partially new beginning, still for sagesex a new era has begun. Awaiting you are not only Hanoi instead of Frankfurt(Oder), or the Prahurat instead of the Moabit, and sexy asian girls where before there was just German white bread. Coming up next: The Bangkok Strange Street Food Series – Berlin’s snack offerings are laughable compared to this! The sagesex crew has set out to bring all of South East Asia to your screens, filmed through our eyes and fascinated by our mind! Right on time for Chinese new year we also wish you a happy new year of the metal tiger and welcome you to the sagesex world tour!
