Five simple and powerful rules for being happy today

Geschrieben von admin am 2. Juli 2009
How I found five simple rules that have improved my life a lot.

A while ago, I went to redeem the Thai massage voucher I had received for my birthday. First off, this Thai massage wasn’t like you might think it is. It was done by a guy, and it was basically just applying pressure. If you’re like me, this might sound disappointing, but you would be wrong. It was an extremely relaxing experience, and I could really use it at the peak of my PhD thesis stress period (by the way, I submitted that thesis today!). So go try it if you can – plus, it’s a perfect gift.

Anyway, following the massage, I was given some tea and rested in my bliss, when I spotted a pink leaflet featuring esoteric symbolism. It said Reiki. You know, the Japanese art of palm healing. I have always been interested in this kind of stuff, and so I flipped it through, just to find this treasure at the end:

Gokai – the five Reiki rules of life

Kyo dake wa ikaru na. Just for today, don’t get angry.

Kyo dake wa shin pai suna. Just for today, don’t worry.

Kyo dake wa kan sha shite. Just for today, be grateful.

Kyo dake wa gyo-o hage me. Just for today, fulfill your duty.

Kyo dake wa hito ni shin setsu ni. Just for today, be nice to your fellow men.

I have retranslated the English wording from the German, the way I see fit. There are many different translations on the web.

I was amazed by the simplicity and beauty of these rules, and I do especially like the “just for today” part. Every rule should have something like that. It feels very liberating to me to just concentrate on today. It doesn’t matter if I slipped up in the past, or what the future brings. Just in this moment, today, these are five good ideas. I found it astonishingly easy to keep to them most of the time, and I hope so will you.
